As much as we try to avoid it, everyone has to become an adult eventually. This maturity comes with doing things we swore we wouldn’t let happen to us, but it’s just inevitable. While post-grad life has many advantages, there are just some aspects that make you feel straight up old and leave you wondering, “What happened to me?”

1. Your birthday gift requests are a lot different.

With an empty bank account, you see new potential in your birthday gifts. Instead of asking for an expensive pair of shoes or a bottle of alcohol, you want to ask for grocery money and help on next month’s rent.

2. Your idea of a good Friday night changes.

A glass of wine, some snacks, sweatpants, and HBO sounds a lot more enjoyable than getting all dolled up to stand around at a crowded bar.

3. Going on social media is way less fun.

You used to post fun pictures of your night out on Instagram and stalk that cute guy from class on Facebook. Now your newsfeed is filled with engagements, babies, and new apartments.

4. You start paying attention to the news.

Not just because you need to know the weather, but also because you need to know what’s going on in the world so you can have a conversation with your co-workers without looking like an uninformed idiot.

5. Your alcohol tolerance drops significantly.

As soon as you graduate, your tolerance is not what it used to be. Going out several times a week with very few consequences becomes casually having a few beers and somehow still feeling some lingering signs of a hangover the next day.

6. Shopping is no longer a fun activity.

Shopping no longer consists of a trip to the mall for more clothes you don’t really need. It’s a stressful trip to the grocery store, an expensive investment in work clothes, or a necessary need for furniture and hand soap.

7. Seeing friends actually takes effort.

Unfortunately you no longer live within a three mile radius of all your friends. Hanging out requires making plans (often days in the advance) and taking a lot of effort to not cancel them when you’ve had a long day at work.
