As if you need another reason to swipe left on the dude whose six pictures are all selfies.
Researchers at Ohio State University looked at a group of 1,000 men between 18 and 40 to judge their levels of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Guys who posted a lot of pictures of themselves scored higher on the narcissism and psychopathy scales. The narcissism scores get even higher for those who take the time to edit their photos.
For me, this falls into the “no duh, Captain Obvious” category, and lead researcher Jesse Fox agrees. She told Ohio State News, “It’s not surprising that men who post a lot of selfies and spend more time editing them are more narcissistic, but this is the first time it has actually been confirmed in a study. The more interesting finding is that they also score higher on this other anti-social personality trait, psychopathy, and are more prone to self-objectification.” Fox is currently holding follow up studies to see if the same holds true for selfie-obsessed women.
It’s pretty depressing that guys who show off their gorgeously sculpted bodies are more likely to be crazy. Regular Patrick Batemans? Maybe not, but I’m not taking the chance. Next mirror selfie, I’m running the other way.
