You have a great guy who is one of your best friends. But you can’t help but notice how cute he is when he laughs or the way his hair blows in the wind…oh crap, you have feelings. Getting out of the dreaded friend zone isn’t easy – you’re changing someone’s entire view of you – but it’s possible.
1. Start Putting Yourself in More Date-Like Situations
Do you only hang out with him around the dorm or in groups? No wonder he doesn’t think of you as anything more than a buddy! Try asking him if he’s free for brunch at a cool cafe so you can actually talk one-on-one. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it might shift how he views your relationship.
2. Touch
Small gestures like putting your hand on his shoulder or touching his knee when you’re talking give a subtle hint that you’re interested. If he returns the efforts, it’s a good sign.
3. Spread the Word
Remember in grade school when you told one friend your crush then suddenly the entire class knew? Same rules apply. If you start saying little things like, “Josh has been looking really cute lately” around your best girlfriends, they might casually slip to him that you’re interested. You might want to ask his close friends if he’s seeing anyone so you know if there’s a chance.
4. Keep Busy
No matter how much you like a guy, you can’t schedule your days around him in hopes that he’ll pay attention to you. Continue to go out with the girls or play on your volleyball team. He will love that you have different hobbies and interests.
5. Do Him Small Favors
He will notice if you remember to grab him the last slice of pizza at the dining hall or save him a seat in class. It seems like no big deal, but helping him out a little shows you care.
6. If It’s Not Happening, Let It Go
If he’s not showing any signs that he feels the same way, don’t push it. The last thing you want to do is creep him out and lose him as a friend. You’ll find someone new – someone who sees you as girlfriend material, not just a friend.
