If you were a scene kid in the early 2000s, it’s more than likely that you were completely, 100% obsessed with everything Andrew McMahon. He could do no wrong, whether he was singing “Konstantine” with Something Corporate or “The Mixed Tape” with Jack’s Mannequin. Now, Andrew McMahon is on his own, performing as Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.
Take a walk down memory lane this throwback Thursday with his best songs from over the years (and learn what your favorite says about you).
1. Something Corporate – “Punk Rock Princess”
This video made you believe you were a punk rock princess worthy of saving. It led to lots of eyeliner, Hot Topic bracelets, and crushes on emo boys. Now, you realize that the only person who can save you is yourself, but at the time all you wanted in life was a good pair of man bangs to protect you from the harsh realities of middle school. You still love a good dive bar because you feel like you’re basically the main character in this music video.
Honorable mention: “I Want To Save You” (because you knew one day your emo prince would come)
2. Something Corporate – “I Woke Up In A Car”
You contemplated what these lyrics truly meant until your head was spinning. You also developed a major crush on William Tell, which you still haven’t quite gotten over (but you still love Lauren Conrad).
Honorable mention: “Cavanaugh Park” (because no one *got* you)
3. Something Corporate – “Space”
This is exactly how you felt when your mom wouldn’t stop bothering you. (Which you now desperately miss, because there’s no one to cook and clean and love you unconditionally 24/7). Full disclosure: you still sometimes feel this way when you’re home for more than a week. It’s entirely possible that you purchased the same emo glasses as Andrew.
Honorable mention: “If You C Jordan” (because both were the perfect songs to sing along to alone in your room)
4. Something Corporate – “Me And The Moon”
This song 100% made you question how happy your suburban mother really was (especially since you constantly told her how you needed space).
Honorable mention: “Konstantine” (because both are full of feelings)
5. Jack’s Mannequin – “The Mixed Tape”
Why doesn’t anyone make mix tapes anymore? I would far prefer that to a late night sext, as far as presents go.
Honorable mention: “Holiday From Real” (because both are perfect for epic road trips)
6. Jack’s Mannequin – “Dark Blue”
Because everyone has felt alone in a crowded room before.
Honorable mention: “Hammers and Strings” (because both show that Jack’s Mannequin understands you like Something Corporate did)
7. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness – “Canyon Moon”
A new band name, still the same old Andrew.
Honorable mention: “Cecilia And The Satellite” (because his daughter is beyond cute)
Can’t get enough of Andrew? It’s understandable. Here are his best songs in all their glory:
