Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a super-important holiday for couples – but as someone who has spent the day as part of a couple several times and as a single person many times…..honestly? Sometimes I think it’s more fun to be a single lady on Valentine’s Day.
Don’t get me wrong: I love having the opportunity to get dressed up and go on a nice date with the one I love. I’m sure whatever I do for Valentine’s Day this year will be lovely….I just find the holiday a little overrated.
People in relationships have the chance to go eat an expensive meal by candlelight while people who are single have the chance to binge eat brownies and get really wasted with their best friends. Which option is more fun? Well, I’ll let you decide.
Valentine’s Day is nice for couples but it has the potential to be awesome for singles – here’s why this holiday is, in some ways, better when you’re single.
1. There are no expectations.
You won’t be disappointed by a lackluster gift, unromantic plans or a thoughtless date if you have no expectations. There’s really nothing worse than getting all dolled up for a surprise Valentine’s Day date only to find your SO in ratty jeans and a tee at your local sports bar for the millionth time.
2. It’s cheaper.
Between a fancy dinner, a card, a gift and whatever else you have in store, Valentine’s Day plans can be pretty pricey when you’re celebrating the holiday with someone else. When you’re single you don’t have to worry about buying anyone a damn thing.
3. You can have multiple valentines.
Spend the day with 4 of your closest friends. Hell, spend it with 12 friends. You can do whatever you want because single people MAKE THEIR OWN RULES on Valentine’s Day. Consider having a secret Santa-style gift exchange with your group of besties so everyone feels the love on the holiday.
4. You don’t have to get all dressed up.
Wearing a hot little red dress when it’s literally freezing outside? Yeah, no thanks. Single ladies have the option of staying in sweats all night long – I mean, obviously people in relationships can do that too, but if your significant other wants to go out and celebrate, there goes your dream of watching old episodes of Friends in your sweats.
5. It’s full of possibilities.
If you’re unattached, the holiday could turn into an epic night out with your friends (especially since the holiday falls on a Saturday.) You could meet someone you like while you’re out. You could go on a really great blind date. You could go on an awful blind date and wind up with tons of new stories to tell your friends. So many possibilities!
6. You can be completely selfish.
If you’re single you have total control over how you spend the holiday. If you want to eat Chinese food alone, you can do that. If you want to get martinis and dance all night with your friends, you can do that too. The point is, it’s all up to you. Coupled-off people don’t often have that option on V-day.
7. There’s no pressure.
You don’t have to worry about choosing the perfect place to have dinner or the right gift if you’re single. I mean, being a person in a relationship means you’re basically reliving the stress of the holiday season all over again on Valentine’s Day. And ain’t nobody got time for that.
