Now that one of the Madden brothers is officially engaged (and to Cameron Diaz, no less), your middle school soul is probably crying. While GC wasn’t as high on the boy band heartthrob scale as, say, The All American Rejects or Brand New, they still made you feel all the tween feelings.
Once the twin band leaders started getting wifed up by celebrities, they really lost their mojo (sorry, Cameron Diaz). They moved on to dance floor tunes that had 100% less feels than their punk rawk days. Just because you’d never be caught dead listening to new GC doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take every opportunity to throw it back with their old school angry ways.
1. The Anthem
This actually was my middle school anthem, and it drove me absolutely crazy when the popular kids started listening to it, because how could they know my life? Whatever, I’m still cooler than them. If you didn’t relate to “My high school felt more to me like a jail cell, a penitentiary,” on a real level, we probably wouldn’t have been friends as children.
2. Girls & Boys
The best part of this song is that they ended up dating the most money-crazed ladies around — I mean, obviously Paris Hilton has her own stash of dollar bills, but she’s certainly a high maintenance lady.
3. Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous
This song is so much better now that you know it’s actually their lives… Your middle school self would be so upset with them for selling out (but your adult self wishes you could live that lifestyle, too).
4. Little Things
The perfect mixture of rap and rock, Kid Rock style. So misunderstood, and so much Hot Topic. Really inspirational, especially if you felt like you were always sitting in the bleachers (and not in the Taylor Swift type of way).
